Cross makers taking on the ACLU
A cross in every yard in Eunice.
That’s Knights of Columbus Council 1745 member Bill Parrie’s mission.
“I was inspired by a similar project I saw pictured on the Internet from Missouri,” Parrie said. “We need to do something. I would like to see a cross in every yard in Eunice. I aim high.”
Parrie and several members of the St. Anthony’s KC Council are constructing and painting small white crosses, and the crosses are available at 251 N. 6th St. in Eunice or at Bertrand’s Printing & Office on Second Street. A $5 donation per cost is requested. The proceeds will go to the KC Council to help fund charity causes.
“(It’s a stand) Against the ACLU,” Parrie said. He said that organization wants traditional Judeo-Christian references removed from public places. “We say ‘Merry Christmas,’ not ‘Happy Holidays’ because without Christmas, there would be no holiday.”
“It’s non-denominational. We have people from all faiths buying crosses.”
Parrie himself made and painted about 300 crosses in the last few weeks, and he recently enlisted the help of fellow KC members Burt Sylvester, Charlie Moffitt and Bob Soileau, all of Eunice.
“About 15 or 20 people a day stop by for a cross,” Parrie said. “People pass by and see them in my yard.”
“As long as people want them, we will make them.”
Parrie will be in front of St. Anthony Catholic Church Nov. 14-15 for anyone wanting to purchase crosses.
