P;olice Chief Gary “Goose” Fontenot announced he would run for re-election.
Mayor Kenneth Peart was ready for the July 4th fireworks show. Don Fontenot and his and were to open the festivities at the Northwest Community Center pavilion.
Former Eunice High School track star, Jeanne Menard, was named to the 2002 All-Louisiana Collegiate Track and Field Team by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. Menard was a member of the University of Louisiana Lafayette women’s track team and was named one of three 5,000-meter runners on the association’s All-Louisiana Women’s Team.
Donald Smith announced as a candidate for police chief.
An audit cited the St. Landry Parish Police Jury for personal use of parish cell phones, nepotism and improper recording to fixed assets.
Mark Benoit, of Eunice, was photographed holding a “tall” tomato plant from his garden. Benoit said he was a battling diseases in his garden, but the plant still yield tomatoes.
Lt. Col. Warren Fontenot was promoted to colonel in a ceremony at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. Fontenot had attended high school in Eunice. After the promotion he assumed command of the 607th Air Support Group at Osan Air Base in the Republic of Korea.
