Evangeline chief civil deputy charted with theft

An Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office employee, who has been a chief civil deputy in the tax office since 2003, was arrested Wednesday and charged with malfeasance in office and felony theft of about $40,000 over the course of one year.
Bond for the former employee, Rebecca DeVillier of Ville Platte, was set at $25,000.
Investigators said DeVillier was writing checks to receive cash from the tax office general fund, and the case has been turned over to the Louisiana State Police.
Auditors continue to review the finances of the sheriff’s office relating to this case.
