Eunice native Les “Pe-Te” Johnson may have made his home in Texas for more than 30 years, but he kept his ties to the Cajun prairie alive and even promoted the culture on Houston radio stations.
The resolution states Johnson served four years in the Air Force after his 1958 graduation from Eunice High School. He moved to Texas and opened Pe-Te’s Cajun BBQ House in 1979 and owned and operated it until 2002.
The resolution includes, “Whereas, the Cajun culture took root in Texas with Saturday afternoon and evening dances at Pe-Te’s BBQ House, and NASA employees were drawn to the establishment by the good food and good times provided by Pe-Te and his staff; Pe-Te’s galaxy-famous barbecue and beans and rice have made it into space by means of the space shuttle, and Pe-Te’s cassette tapes and CDs of Cajun music have been played in the space shuttle and on the space station ...”
The resolution also states Johnson was on air at KTEK in Houston from 1981 to 1983 and he has volunteered as disc jockey at the non-profit public radio station KPFT since 1983. He played the Cajun Bandstand radio show three times a week and earned moniker, the Cajun Voice in Houston, the resolution stated.
The resolution also states the Cajun French Music Association Museum in Eunice includes cassette tapes and CDs that made the trip to space and back.
Johnson is a member of the Cajun French Music Association Museum, it notes along with he and his wife of 48 years, Jennie Johnson, often travel between Friendswood, Texas, and Eunice.
The resolution commends Johnson for his broadcasting and for being a “Cajun ambassador to the Lone Star State.”
