Eunice's refurbished and restocked City Lake opened to anglers, picnickers and general relaxation seekers at 9 a.m. today.
The lake features a new pavilion and picnic area and is stocked with bass, bream, crappie and catfish, all part of a $1 million upgrade paid for with money leftover from the $65 million settlement of the 2000 train derailment nearby.
Mayor Rusty Moody handed keys to the complex to Deputy Police Chief Varden Guillory, Sr., standing in for Chief Ronald Dies. The department will lock and unlock the complex (about dusk and about dawn) daily as well as conduct regular patrol of the area during its operating hours.
Anglers had lined up at the gate by 6 a.m. today, anxiously awaiting wetting their hooks in the revitalized fishery.
