Louisiana State University Eunice is among teacher training grant recipients

Louisiana State University Eunice is among 26 recipients of grants for implementing innovative models for teacher training.
The Louisiana Department of Education announced a second round of Believe and Prepare Educator Preparation grants, adding to seven recipients already implementing innovative models for teacher training, the department said in a news release.
Grants totaling more than $1 million will be awarded to Louisiana school systems partnering with educator preparation programs to prepare aspiring educators through a yearlong apprenticeship or residency, with $910,000 going to programs that will be operational this year and $120,000 going to programs in a development phase.
The grant recipients will operate April through June 2016, according to the news release issued Friday.
Louisiana State University Eunice is to receive $50,000.
“Treating teachers as professionals starts with how we prepare them for their careers,” said State Superintendent John White. “School systems and colleges can partner to ensure every teacher candidate is mentored by our state’s finest educators. This is common sense, and I am thrilled so many school systems are taking this important step forward.”
In the first year of Believe and Prepare, seven pilots prepared teachers through residencies or apprenticeships in public schools, under the tutelage of master educators. These pilots developed and tested several innovative methods for recruiting and preparing teachers. The seven pilots from the first round will be awarded grants up to $50,000 each to continue their work in 2015-2016.
