MLK Celebration panel to award scholarships
The City-Wide MLK Celebration Committee announced this week that it will award scholarships to two students each year.
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship is named in honor of the civil rights leader who showed the nation that peaceful protest could make changes that resulted in equal rights for all people.
“We are proud of the opportunity to present this scholarship to two students, one black, one white,” the committee said in a news release.
Recipients will be judged using the following criteria: a combination of need, academic ability and community involvement.
Applications are now available and will be available on March 1 each year and must be returned a week prior to the annual Dr. King celebration on the third Sunday in January.
The scholarship is offered to students attending an accredited university, trade school, mechanical school or a school where a higher degree is awarded.
Students must have a Grade Point Average of 2.5 or above and provide a copy of their high school transcript. Applicants must write a 500-word essay explaining why they should received this scholarship.
Additionally, two letters of recommendation are needed (non-relative who can attest to character, values, need, for example, teacher, pastor, counselor, job supervisor.) Applicant must be at the Dr. King Celebration to receive the scholarship.
