One Acadiana: Flood cost millions $$$

By Harlan Kirgan Editor

Flood damage to houses in the nine-parish One Acadiana region are estimated from $81 million to $253 million, according to a report by Jason El Koubi, president and CEO, sent to the regional chamber of commerce’s board members.
The assessment is about the Aug. 13 flooding.
One Acadiana includes the parishes of Lafayette, Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Jeff Davis, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary and Vermilion. St. Mary Parish is the only parish reporting it was not damaged by the flooding.
The number of houses in the eight flood-affected parishes are from 2,975 to 4,375. The One Acadiana estimate for St. Landry Parish is 100 to 200 houses, but parish and city officials are estimated about 500 houses were affected by flooding.
The estimate on businesses affected in the eight parishes is 152 to 244. In St. Landry Parish, 12 to 24 business were affected.
“Reports from around the region continue to indicate that a large majority of homeowners did not have flood insurance, which will likely constrain and delay recovery expenditures,” El Koubi wrote.
As for businesses, “Many more businesses lost economic activity due to impassable roads, dislocated employees, and other flood-related issues. Similarly, most insurance policies for lost business activity did not include flood events.”
