Public, parochial schools, LSU Eunice closed Friday as slippery system slides south
St. Landry Parish, Acadia Parish and Evangeline Parish public schools and school-related activities are cancelled Friday.
St. Landry Supt. Edward Brown said the decision to close in his parish was made in light of anticipated inclement weather conditions on Friday.
He said all schools, the Central Office, Resource Center and Pupil Appraisal Center will be closed, and all extra-curricular activities, sports game included, have been cancelled Friday night.
The Science Fair at Beau Chene is still scheduled for Saturday, January 25, 2014.
Elementary Principal James Wallett said St. Edmund Catholic School in Eunice would be closed and sporting events cancelled.
LSU Eunice message alert recipients received notification at mid-afternoon today that the campus will be closed Friday.
Forecasters have established the possibility of sleet, snow and/or freezing rain late tonight through mid-day Friday as a slippery system slides south and east.
A mix of rain and sleet should begin in east Texas and central Louisiana this evening, before transitioning to mostly snow after midnight, according to the National Weather Service.
Total snow accumulations should be around one inch in east Texas, and less than one inch in central Louisiana.
Further south, southeast Texas and southwest and south central Louisiana will see patchy light rain this evening transition to a mix of light sleet and freezing rain after midnight. This precipitation could linger through the morning hours, before ending sometime Friday afternoon. Total ice accumulations will be less than a quarter inch in southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana, and less than one tenth of an inch in south central Louisiana.
The first places that will pose problems will be bridges and overpasses, and any other elevated roadways across the entire region after midnight tonight through Friday morning.
Also, some ice could accumulate on trees and power lines, causing scattered power outages. Southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana will have the highest threat for these scattered power outages..
