Supervisor Jerome Robinson reviews proposed policy revisions at School Board committee meeting.

School policy revisions include participation rules

Specify no limit on academic or athletic activity

Students can participate in as many extracurricular activities, including athletics, as he/she chooses and is eligible for under a policy change proposed for the St. Landry Parish school system.

Current policy does not expressing prohibit a students from participating in multiple sports but such activity, it has been claimed, is often discouraged by a coach of one sport or another, at one school or another.

The revised policy is necessary due to changes in state law, according to Supervisor of Child Welfare and Attendance Jerome Robinson, who reviewed the proposed change and others at the monthly Executive Committee meeting.

A pending policy change will prohibit home school students participating in athletics. That prohibition does not apply to students enrolled in a public school but taking virtual classes from home.

The bullying and hazing policy will be altered, assuming full board approval, and will stipulate the system will provide at least four hours training for all new employees who have contact with students and two hours each year thereafter for all such employees, including bus drivers, with respect to bullying.

A number of changes are proposed in the policy dealing with dismissal of employees and the emergency/crisis management plan, all stipulated by acts of the Legislature and/or polices of the State Dept. of Education.
