Street project revised

By Harlan Kirgan Editor

A street improvement project in University Place was altered after it was discovered the road base was nearly non-existent in places.
Karl Aucoin, city engineer, recommended the Board of Aldermen change the program to allow rebuilding the road base of the roads slated for improvement in the subdivision.
The board approved the plan at its meeting Tuesday.
The change will cost an extra $107,000 to $131,000, Aucoin said.
Elliot Construction, of Grand Coteau, won the street improvement project in April with a bid of $784,725, plus an additional $21,600 for a asphalt upgrade.
Aucoin said it has been as long as 50 years since the University Place roads were installed.
The subdivision’s roads have never been overlaid, Jack Burson, alderman at-large, said in an earlier meeting.
“If we want to construct a road that is going to last like it should, it is almost what you’ve got to do,” he said of the revised plan.
A presentation by firefighters on their carrying of concealed weapons was withdrawn from the board’s agenda.
Fire Chief Mike Arnold said at an agenda-setting meeting on Sept. 8 that a group of firefighters are asking that they be permitted to carry weapons while on duty.
Other business at Tuesday’s meeting included:
— Mayor Scott Fontenot asked aldermen to return to its October meeting with names for a recreation committee, which is to include up to 13 members to meet monthly.
— Anthony Baltakis was appointed to the Eunice-Opelousas Library Board. Burson said Baltakis will be able to assist with changes and coordinate collaboration with the LSUE library. Baltakis is a professor at LSU Eunice.
— Approved a five-year $2.5 million capital improvement plan for the Eunice airport. The city’s cost match for the projects totals $165,000. The work includes lighting, removal of obstructions, a new apron and aircraft hangars.
— State Rep. Phillip DeVillier, R-Eunice, said there are timelines for the city to apply for a assistance with projects related to the August flooding.
— Trick-or-treat was set for Oct. 31.
