Woman charged in child’s death

A Church Point woman was arrested Tuesday in connection with the death of her 2-year-old son, who fell out of the vehicle she was driving, according to Louisiana State Police.
Amber Watson, 32, of Church Point was charged with no child restraint and child desertion and booked into the Acadia Parish Jail, police said.
She could face up to six months in jail on each charge.
Police said Watson told them her son was latched into a car seat, but unhooked himself and climbed into the front seat. She said somehow the window got rolled down and her son fell out of the moving vehicle, police said.
The incident occurred on La. 365 north of La. 1099 in Acadia Parish.
The 2-year-old sustained critical injuries and was taken to Our Lady of the Lake in Baton Rouge, where he later died from his injuries, police said.
“No child restraint obviously because the child was not in a restraint at the time the crash occurred,” Master Trooper Brooks David with the Louisiana State Police said in report posted on the KATC website. “Child desertion, the way the statue reads, anybody under the age of 10 that is put at risk by a parent or a caretaker or anybody that is in that child’s custody that puts that child in unnecessary risk of harm, great bodily harm or even death, is considered child desertion.”
Watson bonded out of jail shortly after being booked into it.
