Lady Bengals qualify for regionals with win over PRCC

The win against PRCC was enough to qualify LSUE for a spot in next month’s regional playoff tournament. Pearl River scored first in the opener, picking up one run in the top of the first before extending their lead to 2-0 on Sarah Farve’s solo home run in the top of the second.

The LSU at Eunice Lady Bengals split a crucial doubleheader against Pearl River Community College Tuesday, dropping a 10-2 decision in the opener before reversing the score on the Wildcats in the nightcap.

The win against PRCC was enough to qualify LSUE for a spot in next month’s regional playoff tournament.

Pearl River scored first in the opener, picking up one run in the top of the first before extending their lead to 2-0 on Sarah Farve’s solo home run in the top of the second.

The Lady Bengals (14-26, 6-3) tied the score in the second half on Jessica Cooper’s 2-RBI base hit.

But the Wildcats retook the lead in the top of the fourth with three runs, including Jessica Dubuisson’s two-run single.

In the top of the sixth, Wildcat Whitney Sumpter doubled and then scored on Judy Barber’s home run to extend PRCC’s lead to 7-2.

Three more runs in the top of the seventh sealed the deal for PRCC.

Hannah Latiolais took the loss for LSUE, giving up 10 runs on 20 hits and no walks while striking out two batters in six-and-two-thirds innings.

The Lady Bengals came back with a bang in the nightcap, seizing the lead in the bottom of the first when Kami Hebert drove in one run.

LSUE extended its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second when Leigh Ann Jukes singled and scored on Amanda Savoie’s home run.

PRCC got on the board in the top of the third when Kim Boutwell reached on an error and scored on a passed ball.

In the top of the fourth, Dubuisson scored during a rundown, narrowing LSUE’s lead to 3-2.

In the second half, Cooper drew a walk and scored on Hebert’s home run to extend the Lady Bengals’ lead to 5-2.

LSUE wrapped up the game in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases and exploding for five runs.

Elizabeth Kaiser singled to score two runs; later Leigh Ann Jukes doubled for one run before being driven home on Savoie’s 2-RBI double.

Kaiser pitched the win for LSUE, giving up two unearned runs off of six hits and two walks; Kaiser struck out four batters in the seven-inning game.

The Lady Bengals wrap up their season at home on Monday with a doubleheader against Louisiana College, beginning at 3 p.m.
