The first two weeks of the high school football season have been eventful for the Blue Jays even without playing a single down.

But for St. Edmund head coach Tom Andrus it is time to see the excitement take place on the field.

Hurricane Gustav wiped out the Blue Jays’ scheduled home opener against Sacred Heart of Ville Platte.

Hurricane Ike also caused the school’s administration to consider changing the date against East Beauregard.

While many schools switched their games to Wednesday and tonight to avoid the possible effects of Ike, the Blue Jays will entertain the Trojans 7 p.m. Friday at the Blue Jay Field.

While the weather is out of his hands, Andrus said it is time for his team to finally get a chance to play.

“We need to play a game,” the coach commented. “It is not good for the guys to sit two weeks without playing a game.”

East Beauregard, winless in 2007, fell 12-6 against Oberlin last Saturday.

The Trojan offense operates from the split veer with senior quarterback John Schlag leading the way along with running backs Corey Townsley, Jackson Mahaffey and Michael Ard.

“They only threw the ball twice,” Andrus said. “They run the ball pretty decent.”

“They are not big up front but they are pretty quick to tbe ball,” Andrus said of the Trojan defense. “They gave Oberlin all they could handle.”

Andrus said he is more concerned about his team than the Trojans.

“If we play ball we can beat them, if we don’t then we will get our butts kicked.

“It is hard to know what to expect,” he said. “But we can’t take them too lightly. Anybody is beatable on any given day.”

The last time the Blue Jays took the field was on Aug. 28 in a 14-6 weather-shortened jamboree loss to Westminster Christian Academy.

Against WCA, St. Eds quarterback Marshall Arabie gained 72 yards on six carries including an 11-yard touchdown, while going 5-of-11 passing for 87 yards.

Trevor Hargroder was the main target with three catches for 77 yards against the Crusaders.
