Mrs. R.S. Parrot, Sr. received a certificate and pin for 15 years service to the Selective Service Board from Walter Morrison, director.
Permits have been issued for four new residents: Eddie Daigle, $7,500, Becky street; Huey Spell, $4,700, North 11th; C.A. Mornhinveg, $5,000, no location; and Moise Thibodeaux, $6,000, East Maple.
Construction will start in January on Coastal Transmission’s compressor station five miles southwest of the city near Tepetate. Charles Sikes is the company’s manager in this area.
The Hospital Service District board called a $325,000 bond eleciton in January, with proceeds to finane adding 50 beds to the 36-bed hospital, according to board chairman Wilson Moosa.
Louis Wright’s Store, a Eunice landmark, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Mrs. Wright, who lives at 451 South 3rd, said she and her husband, who died in 1951, came here from Opelousas. The store is now operated by by one of their six children and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Irving Kerstein.
St. Ed football players named to the all-district first team are Paul Creswell, center, and Mike Manuel, offensive back. Eunice High first-team picks are Johnny Cottrell, center, and Austin Smith, offensive back.
Cedric Fruge is remodeling and giving a facelift to the former Rex Theatre building on North 2nd. He is uncertain what business will operate in the renovated facility.
State Public Works Director Claude Kirkpatrick said $50,000 will be used to fix drainage problems near the city limits of east Eunice. Engineer Red Aucoin said the city needs to spend about $170,000 to cure drainage ills.
Lester Quirk has closed his landmark grocery store. The business was founded by his brother Ferdinand in 1931 and purchased by Lester in 1953.
The Eunice Association for Retarded Children organized at a meeting at the Chamber of Commerce offices. Bill Broome is the leading advocate.
Civil Defense Director Jere Longman said he will begin inventoring buildings in the coming year for use as potential public fallout shelters.
St. Ed basketballers this season include Kenneth Reed, Francis Manuel, Berro LaFleur, Tommy Voinche, Steve Guillory, Harold Fuselier, Roderick (Mamou) Fuselier, Jim Watson, Pat Manuel, Charley Fontenot and Jebby Montz.
