City clears way for 11-unit subdivision
The Eunice City Ccouncil has cleared the way for a proposed 11-house subdivision on the recently abandoned Marjorie Street extension, just north of Maple Avenue, between 13th Street and Viola Street.
The city officially abandoned the dirt road centered on the open lot in order to move forward with the sale and development of the property.
“According to the city’s property records, that street had never been abandoned,” said James “Junior” Bergeron, council member for Ward 3. “So, that’s why the council had to officially abandon the street so that the subdivision could move forward.”
Bergeron said that the developer’s attorney found no official city record whatsoever that the city had relinquished any interest in the undeveloped street. Bergeron said that the developer urged that the undone city road be officially abandoned. The developer will not leave the dirt road as part of the development plans, but rather will incorporate a cul-de-sac on the property with some of the houses facing Elm Street to the north and 13th Street to the east, according to Bergeron.
Bergeron said that the new housing is something that will be good for not just his district, but for the city. He said that the housing could play a part in the predicted petrochemical boom of Southwest Louisiana with the Sasol plant coming to Calcasieu Parish.
“Here we go with more housing, better housing and it’s going to be in a good area and a nice neighborhood,” said Bergeron. “This will help put more tax revenue into the city’s coffers from my district for the whole city.”
The property is owned by the Stephen “Steebo” Guillory family. The buyer of the property is reportedly Doug Marcantel of Louisiana Crane Company. It is believed that Marcantel will work closely with an undisclosed developer to construct a cul-de-sac street and the proposed 11 single-family housing units.
