KEB urges community to clean up

“Working Together to Keep Eunice Beautiful” is the goal of Director Donna Baltakis as she encourages the entire community, including schools, businesses, individuals, in the clean up efforts and beautification of the city in recognition of Keep America Beautiful campaign. The LA Hospice organized cleaning of all four Welcome To Eunice signs, and those instrumental included Rose Campbell, administrator; Paul Schexnayder, patient care representative; and Toni Pitre, office manager. Keep Eunice Beautiful, an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, is again taking part in the Great American Cleanup. Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup is the nation’s largest annual community improvement program that harnesses the power of over 4 million volunteers to build vibrant communities.
Keep Eunice Beautiful is taking part in this effort March 24 to April 7.
Each year affiliates and participating organizations engage volunteers to take action in their communities through programs that deliver positive and lasting impact.
Donna Baltakis, director of KEB, says, “Change can happen when a single seed is planted. That single seed…that single, purposeful decision to do things differently and more responsibly is what Keep Eunice Beautiful believes.”
Keep Eunice Beautiful has many projects this year and the first is working with the Kiwanis Club to involve local business in a “10 Minute Makeover.”
Baltakis said, “This is where merchants will be asked to pledge that they will clean their storefronts, and businesses prior to opening for the day, for a two week period. They are asked to make trash receptacles available and maybe even put out a potted plant.”
Volunteers are asked to also help pick up litter, weed and prune near the Welcome to Eunice signs. Additionally they will clean those signs which have shown wear and tear over the years.
Eunice’s Bulb and Blossom Garden Club will help out with Community Garden to clean, weed, mulch and plant.
The Sheriff’s Department will do their part to help out with Keep Eunice Beautiful. Their trustees come to town to clean litter by targeting some problem areas found in the Community Litter Index done each year as an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful.
Keep Eunice Beautiful is also working on an ordinance that you must put trash in a bag before placing it into trash cans/receptacles.
Recycling is also a part of the Great American Cleanup and Baltakis is asking all local schools to recycle plastic, cans and paper.
Baltakis added, “Landlords are asked to make sure their rental properties have appropriate trash cans and are urged to tell their renters to keep their property clean from trash and litter.
In addition, Keep Eunice Beautiful is asking all residents to join them during this two-week period by being a role model so others may follow your example and do their part as well in cleaning up our city.
