Early voting begins Saturday

Early voting begins Saturday for the May 3 election which includes proposed rededication of a Eunice sales tax and renewal of two St. Landry Parish School District property taxes. Neither of the tax proposals involve new or increased taxes.
Registrar of Voters Cheryl Milburn said her office in the courthouse in Opelousas will be open from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday for early voting, which will close on Saturday, April 26.
Eunice city officials propose of rededicate an existing 1 percent sales tax, allowing the city to use up 10 percent for emergency response needs.
As now written, the tax proceeds are restricted to capital outlay spending. The tax income would still be used for that purpose in most cases, but rededication would allow city officials some flexibility in the use of the funds.
The School District tax renewals are for a period of 10 years each. One is 11.78 mills, the other is 4.37 mills. The taxes provide salary funds as well as maintenance and operation revenue.
Milburn reminded that persons must present picture identification with the voter’s signature on it.
Any person needed assistance in voting must declare that prior to voting.
