State's oldest World War II vet, survivor of D-Day, dies
Services will be Tuesday for Louisiana's oldest surviving World War II veteran Edd Joseph Bordelon, who died on the eve of his country's annual three-day weekend remembering its fallen armed forces.
Bordelon, a native of Hessmer in Avoyelles Parish, enlisted in the Army in 1939 two years before Pearl Harbor, as war clouds were building over Europe.
He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant while training under the leadership of Gen. Omar Bradley, and participated in the invasion of Normandy in June 1944. He was subsequently assigned to Gen. George Patton's 3rd Army, which arrived in France in August 1944 and began its rush toward Germany.
After the war, Bordelon returned to Central Louisiana where he became a brick mason, then a residential contractor.
A Christian Funeral service with Military Honors will be held at 1:30 p. m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church, Alexandria. Reverend Dan O'Conner will be officiating and Reverend Chad Partin will be assisting. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial. Arrangements are bf Hixson Brothers Funeral Home, Alexandria. Visitation will be held at the church from l0:00 a.m. until shortly before the service.
