Lady Bengal duo shines in Canada
Former LSU Eunice stars Brooklynn Clark and Codi Covington recently returned from participating in the 20th annual Canadian Open Fastpitch International Competition.
Clark and Covington represented the NJCAA national team and competed against four national teams – including Team USA – and three elite squads from July 13-21 at three softball facilities in Surrey, Canada.
The NJCAA All-Star team consisted of 16 graduating sophomores from 10 member colleges that maintained at least a 2.5 grade-point average.
Clark was named Tournament All Star 1st baseman as she led the All-Stars with a .476 batting average.
“Getting picked as one of the 16 girls from the USA to represent the NJCAA in the Canadian Open was such an honor,” Clark said. “When I arrived on the 9th I did not expect to become this close with all the girls on the team but it was like we had known each other already.
“We bonded really well and I knew we were going to compete really well while we were there.
“It was an amazing experience to play against some of the girls I use to look up to and actually compete with them,” Clark said.
“We went 6-6 in the tournament (6 loses, 6 wins), but we were the youngest team there and had only met each other a couple of days before we had to play,” she explained. “ The other teams had played together in college and had way more experience than we did.
“This was a once in a lifetime experience and I’m so glad my family got to enjoy it with me,” Clark said.
For Covington, like her teammate, being on the team was a thrill.
“It was a great experience and a childhood dream I got to achieve,” Covington said. “The girls I met not only did I become teammates with them but I gained life long friendships with each one of them.
“I’m so thankful I got this opportunity to represent the NJCAA, USA, LSUE, as well as my family and friends in Canada.”
Clark and Covington will continue to play together as they move on to LSU Alexandria next month.
