Federal judge
NEW ORLEANS – Services for long-time U.S. District Court Judge Frederick Heebe will be Aug. 17. He died Aug. 10 at age 91.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II’s Asiatic Pacific Theatre. He was elected to the Jefferson Parish Council before being elected a state district judge. He as appointed to the federal bench by President Lyndon Johnson in 1966. He was chief judge of the Eastern District for more than 20 years and took senior status at age 70.
Heebe served as a federal judge during a tumultuous time in American history, and he decided many important and historic cases. Most notable among those were civil rights cases involving public school desegregation, voting rights, employment and housing discrimination, and access to public accommodations. Other matters that came before him involved the preservation of historic French Quarter buildings; the effort by Clay Shaw to stop his prosecution by Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison in connection with the assassination of President Kennedy; protest over the Vietnam War; and battles over reapportionment.
Survivors include several children.

Former sheriff
BENTON – Services will be Aug. 15 for former Bossier Parish Sheriff Vol Dooley. He died Aug. 11 at age 87.
He was a law enforcement officer for 40 years. He was a state trooper for four years before joining the department of Sheriff Willie Waggonner, succeeding him in 1976. He held the post 12 years.
Survivors include his wife Ruth, five sons and a daughter.
Arrangements are by Hillcrest.
Restaurant Hall member
MONROE – Services for La. Restaurant Association Hall of Fame member MIldred Maurer will be Aug. 14. She died Aug. 11 at age 97.
She was a retired teacher and regional director of the restaurant group. Kid’s Corner at the Children’s Museum is dedicated to her.
Survivors include a son.

Retired La. Tech professor
RUSTON – Services for retired La. Tech professor of education Dr. Jason Owen will be Aug. 14. He died at age 89,
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II’s Asiatic Pacific Theatre. He was a teacher in Mansfield and director of Tech’s A.E. Phillips Laboratory School for 11 years before becoming a professor of education.
Survivors include a brother.
Arrangements are by Kilpatrick.
Former Tulane gridder
NEW ORLEANS – Services for former Tulane football player Samuel McGrew will be Aug. 15. He died Aug. 10.
He was a residential appraiser and realtor. He Tulane team beat LSU and played in the Astro Bluebonnet Bowl in 1973.
Survivors include a son.
