Grand Isle opens kayak launch

In response to the growing popularity of kayak fishing in Grand Isle, the town has opened a new kayak launch on the island’s bay side near the LSU Sea Grant Oyster Hatchery.
“Situated on the north side of the island in such a central location, the new launch provides quicker access to areas such as Bayou Rigaud, Fifi Island and Dutch Island, offering calmer waters for kayakers,” said Grand Isle Port Commission Executive Director Wayne Keller. “It came about with help from multiple organizations, and we hope to see it become well used in the near future.”
Located on Grand Isle Port Commission, the launch features a gravel road and parking provided by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Lab. Area kayak clubs such as Lafayette Kayak club, Bayou Coast Kayak club and the "Ride the Bull" organization as well as the Coastal Conservation Association, Grand Isle Community Development Team and Friends of Grand Isle provided additional gravel, geocloth, signage and other amenities to help improve the area.
“Grand Isle is already a world-class fishing destination, and kayak fishing adds one more opportunity for anglers to enjoy the waters off our coast,” said Mayor David Carmadelle.
The launch’s opening follows on the heels of Grand Isle’s “Ride the Bull” kayak fishing rodeo, which took place Aug. 15-16, 2014, at Bridge Side Marina. The world’s largest kayak fishing tournament, this year’s event drew more than 700 kayak fisherman angling for Bull Reds in Caminada Pass.
To reach the new launch, turn north onto Ludwig Lane from La. Hwy 1. Take a left just before the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Marine Fisheries Lab, and after about 500 feet, take a right on LSU Lane. Turn left again just before the construction area.
