Wolves down Blue Jays, 33-6

The ninth-ranked Class 4-A Rayne Wolves jumped out to a 20-0 halftime lead and rolled to 33-6 win over the Class 1-A St. Edmund Blue Jays in the season opener.
“We made way too many mistakes to be successful,” St. Edmund head coach Thomas David said. “Against a good team you have to put it together and we didn’t.
“We had three chances in the red zone where we didn’t we didn’t get the ball in,” he said. “The main reason we didn’t score was miscues on our part as we didn’t execute.”
The Blue Jay defense made a play early when linebacker Austin Sittig picked up a Rayne fumble at the St. Ed 41 and raced to the Wolves’ 15 before being brought down.
St. Edmund failed to convert and the drive stalled at the RHS 12.
Rayne then mounted an 11-play, 88-yard scoring drive, capped with a 28-yard pass from Jaylon Reed to Deontrey Wildridge.
The PAT failed but the Wolves led 6-0 with 6:02 left in the first period.
The Blue Jays converted on fourth down on their next possession when the Wolves jumped offsides, but the drive stalled and St. Edmund’s Drew Brown punted the ball 41 yards into the end zone.
It only took five plays for the Wolves to move 80 yards as Byron Mouton exploded 64 yards to the end zone.
Wyatt Ramsey’s PAT pushed the Wolves ahead 13-0 with 28 seconds left in the opening period.
The Blue Jays threatened on their next possession as St. Edmund moved to the Rayne 22 when the drive ended with an incomplete pass into the end zone.
The St. Edmund defense stood tall when Zach LaFleur recovered a Rayne fumble after a pass completion at the Jays’ 19.
After a Blue Jay punt, the St Edmund defense stopped Rayne’s John Besse on fourth down at the SEH 11 with 4:56 left in the half.
The Blue Jays were forced to punt on their next possession and the Wolves went 70 yards in six plays to score.
Reed connected with Trevon Fontenot for two key receptions and then found Mouton open for a six-yard touchdown.
Ramsey’s kick gave the Wolves a 20-0 lead with 53 seconds left before the break.
The two defenses ruled the third period with consecutive punts before Lathan Lyons recovered a Rayne fumble at the Wolves’ 44 with 2:24 left in the frame.
Drew Brown connected with Alex Hunt (15 yards) and Drake Brunet (22 yards) to move the ball to the Rayne 3.
Two plays later Zacb LaFleur scored from a yard out. The two-point conversion failed but the Jays closed the gap to 20-6 with 1:11 left in the third period.
Rayne put the game away with seven-play, 50 yard drive that moved into the fourth quarter.
Besse had several strong runs on the drive and scored on a 4-yard run.
Ramsey’s PAT gave the Wolves a 27-6 lead with 10:33 left in the game.
The Blue Jays attempted to make the score closer as St. Edmund moved the ball from their own 34 to the Wolves’ 1.
But on fourth-and-goal an incomplete pass into the end zone ended the threat.
The Wolves iced the game with a nine-play, 97-yard drive, aided by a long run by Besse that moved Rayne to the Blue Jays’ 39.
In spite of a delay of game and a holding penalty, the Wolves scored on fourth down when Reed tossed the ball to Wildridge for a 9-yard score.
The extra point was blocked but the Wolves led 33-6 with 2:37 left in the game.
Rayne exploded for 558 yards of total offense, including 408 yards on the gound.
St. Edmund finished with 218 yards of total offense.
Brown completed 15-of-33 pases for 169 yards on the night. He added 38 yards on 15 carries.
Hunt led the Jays with 88 yards on seven catches, while Cullen Brown had four receptions for 58 yards.
The Blue Jays (0-1) entertain Iota (0-1) this week. The Bulldogs lost 32-12 to Oberlin.
