Bobcats brace for No. 8 Rayne Wolves
At 3-3, the Bobcats have four games left in the season to make a push for the District 4-4A title and a playoff berth.
That gauntlet for Eunice High (1-2 in district) begins Friday night at home against the No. 8 Rayne Wolves (5-1, 1-1), who rolled to a 39-14 win last week against non-district foe Morgan City.
After opening the district season with a 41-0 win over Opelousas High, the Bobcats then dropped back-to-back games to Washington-Marion (26-20) and LaGrange (43-6).
“We played a good team and we didn’t play that well,” Eunice head coach Paul Trosclair said of the loss last week. “That combination led to a lopsided score.”
The Wolves opened the season with wins over St. Edmund (33-6), North Vermilion (26-10), Abbeville (32-9) and Washington-Marion (28-21) before falling to LaGrange (36-20).
Deontrey Wilridge gained 132 yards on 13 carries including a 45-yard touchddown run against Morgan City, while Javon Cormier added 100 yards on nine carries with a 51-yard score.
The three-headed offensive threat includes John Besse, who gained 70 yards on 13 carries and scored on runs of 18 and three yards against Morgan City.
Quarterback Donald Doucet only completed 2-of-4 passes for 34 yards, but one was a 22-yard scoring strike to Trevon Fontenot.
The Rayne defense limited Morgan City to 60 yards of total offense; 46 yards rushing and 16 yards through the air.
“They have three good guys who can run the ball well,” Trosclair said. “They are throwing the ball better so their offense is more balanced.”
In the loss to LaGrange last week, the Bobcats allowed 263 yards rushing and 236 yard passing.
Eunice had 73 yards on the ground, led by Nick Powell’s 26 yards.
Bobcat quarterback Alex Richard completed 6-of-10 passes for 90 yards and scored Eunice High’s only touchdown on a 7-yard run in the second period.
“We need everybody to buy into playing every play without pointing fingers,” the coach said.
“We need to play better against another good team,” Trosclair said.
“Every game is important with our power point system,” the coach said of their playoff chances. “We have a better game in us somewhere, we just need to find it.”
Trosclair said he is expecting his seniors to step up and provide leadership to turn their season back around.
“Every one needs to take responsibility,” he said. “It starts at the top with me and works its way down.”
