Former legislator
SICILY ISLAND – Services for former legislator and farmer J.D. “Sonny” Gilbert will be Nov. 24. He died Nov. 21.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II’s European theater. He served three terms in the Louisiana Senate and one in the House. After leaving the Legislature he was on the Wildlife and Fisheries Commission and was its chairman for two years. He was former president of the National Wild Federation Board and was a founding director of Jonesville Bank, now known as Southern Heritage State Bank.
Survivors include two children.
Arrangements are by Young’s.
Notre Dame All-American
SHREVEPORT – Services for Notre Dame football All-American and former Independence Bowl chairman Col. John “Jack” Lee, USAF Ret. will be Nov. 25. He died Nov. 18.
He played right guard on the Notre Dame undefeated national championship team of 1953 and was cited as an All-American in 1954. He was a bomber pilot and a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was Independence Bowl chairman in 2004.
Survivors include his wife Kay and eight children.
College librariain
PINEVILLE – Services for retired college librarian James Allen will be Dec. 6. He died Nov. 14 at age 84.
He was former director of the libraries at Louisiana College and at the University of Arkansas, Little Rock.
Survivors include his wife Mary and a daughter.
Catholic educator
NEW ORLEANS – Services for Catholic educator Brother Maurus Bordelon will be Nov. 25. He died Nov. 19 at age 77.
A Brother of Sacred Heart, he formerly taught at Catholic high schools in New Orleans, Donaldsonville, Alexandria and Vicksburg, Miss. He also was on the faculty of St. Columba’s College, St. Albans, England.
Survivors include a sister.
