Lady Cats split games in Iowa tourney
IOWA – The Eunice High Lady Bobcats took a 43-30 victory over the Kinder Yellow Jackets Wednesday afternoon in their opening game of the Iowa High School Tournament.
Coach Therese Gianfala’s Lady Bobcats, who improved to 2-1 with the victory, grabbed an early 5-1 lead after one quarter. But the Lady Jackets bounced back with a 16-10 second quarter advantage to lead 17-15 at the half.
The Lady Bobcats responded with a 12-7 third quarter to lead by three points heading into the final quarter. The Lady Cats used a 16-6 edge over the final eight minutes to earn the victory. Six different Lady Cats scored points in that final quarter with each scoring at least one field goal.
Beulah Bradley topped the scoring for Eunice with 11 points.
Bradley had four field goals for the game, including two from beyond the 3-point arc. Dashaya Vigers and Hali Jack scored nine points apiece for the Lady Cats, while Shania Malveaux and Alicia Ceaser chipped in with five and four points, respectively. Mia Lejeune added three points and Skylar Ardoin had two points to complete the scoring.
Kinder was led in scoring by Emily Estes with 11 points. Destiny Seemion added six points and Avery Barron had five points for the Lady Jackets.
Iowa 51, EHS 40
IOWA – The Eunice High Lady Bobcats found the going tough against the home-standing Iowa High Yellow Jackets in their second game of the Iowa High Basketball Tournament on Thursday night.
Eunice (2-2) fell behind early as Iowa took a 23-11 advantage after one quarter of play.
The Lady Bobcats dug an even bigger hole when they were outscored 13-3 in the second quarter to trail 36-14 at the half.
The Lady Cats were more competitive in the second half as they outscored Iowa by a 26-25 margin. But it wasn’t enough to overcome the first half as the Lady Jackets claimed a 51-40 victory.
The Lady Cats were missing starter Bradley due to a dental procedure and Coach Gianfala indicated that some transportation issues caused the Lady Cats to arrive just five minutes prior to the game. “But we just didn’t compete well in the early going”, she added.
Iowa’s Arianne Durgin led all scorers in the game with 28 points as she hit 14 field goals.
Bailey Richard added 14 points and Danae Williams had nine for the Lady Jackets.
Vigers led the Lady Cats with 13 points and Jack added nine on three 3-point field goals.
Lejeune added seven points and Malveaux chipped in with four.
Other Eunice scorers included Reiah Robinson, with three and Skylar Ardoin and Alicia Ceaser had two points apiece.
Eunice travels to Oakdale on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. contest.
TC 73, Eunice 39
LAFAYETTE –The Teurlings Catholic Rebels jumped to an early lead on the way to a 73-39 victory over the Eunice High Bobcats here Thursday night in the Teurlings Catholic High Basketball Tournament.
The Rebels took over the game in the opening quarter by outscoring the Bobcats by a 21-6 margin. The Bobcats rallied a bit in the second quarter, holding the Rebels to just 14 points while scoring 10 but still trailed 35-16 at the half.
The Rebels (2-0) came out for the second half and erased all doubt about which team was in charge as they scored 22 points while limiting the Cats to 14.
The Rebels ended the game with a 16-9 advantage in the fourth quarter to end the contest.
The Bobcats, now 1-4 on the season, had no player hit the double-digit mark in scoring.
Terryl Poullard led the way with eight points, with Travis Godfrey adding seven and Kevin Williams chipping in with six.
Brandon Ndubueze and Jude Cormier contributed four points apiece to the Bobcat point total.
Cole Kelly finished the game as the Rebels’ top scorer with 28 points. Ike Hildalgo added 12 points, while Ty Labrie and Jansen Lormand chipped in with seven points each.
Eunice will visit Oakdale on Tuesday.
