Trucking lobbyist
DOTHAN, Ala. – Services for retired truck stop owner and lobbyist Elden Shuff will be Dec. 29. He died Dec. 24 at age 82.
He owned and operated a number of truck stops in Louisiana and was an active lobbyist for trucking interests in that state.
Survivors include his wife Marilyn and three children.
Leading logger
BREWTON’S MILL – Services for former president of the Louisiana Logging Council, travis Taylor, will be Dec. 30. He died Dec. 27 at age 69.
He was elected the Louisiana Logger of the Year in 1997 by the Louisiana Forestry Association, and he served as President of the Louisiana Logging Council. He was instrumental in the development of workforce training programs for the logging industry at the Huey P. Long Campus of the Central Louisiana Technical Community College. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Timbermen’s Self Insured Fund, and he was the founder of the Southern Loggers Cooperative.
Survivors include his wife Sharon and several children.
Business educator
NATCHITOCHES – Services for retired educator Dr. Tommy Johnson will be Dec. 30. He died Dec. 26 at age 77.
He served as the head of the Business Education and Office Administration Department at Northwestern State University. He was a Past President of the National Business Education Association. He was a pioneer in many modern educational programs that are standards today.
Survivors include his wife Elizabeth and a daughter.
Anesthesia chief
SHREVEPORT – Services for Dr. Winston Moore, Jr. will be Dec. 30. He died Dec. 24 at age 67.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. He joined the management at Gerlach Meat Co. in Shreveport in 1972 and spent several years there before being drawn back to the medical profession. He practice anesthesia for the 31 years. Beginning in 1998, he served as the Chief of Anesthesia at the Surgical Specialty Center in Shreveport. Since 2007, he served as the Chief of Anesthesia at Specialists Hospital Shreveport.
Survivors include his wife Dianne and several children.
Security provider
LAFAYETTE – Services for security firm owner and retired U.S. Marine Sgt. Maj. Larry Moon will be Jan. 3. He died Dec. 25 at age 75.
He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, two tours, and held two Purple Hearts. He owned and operated Marine Security of Lafayette for more than 30 years.
Survivors include his wife Yoneko and a daughter.
Social worker
HOUMA – Services for retired social worker Myra Byrd will be Jan. 3. She died Dec. 19 at age 101.
She was a career employee with the state Welfare Department, first as a welfare visitor then as supervisor of child welfare for St. Landry Parish.
Survivors include a daughter.
