A holiday treat for SLP board members
Gumbo and potato salad were on the menu recently as St. Landry Parish School Board members along with Superintendent Edward Brown and the professional staff were treated to a holiday meal following their December meeting.
The dining experience was catered by students in the ProStart/Culinary program from the Eunice Career and Technical Education Center (ECTEC) and the Washington Career and Technical Education Center (WCTEC).
“This extraordinary experience gave our students a chance to show off their skills and learn about the many facets of catering a meal,” said Kristine Joubert, Facilitator of the ECTEC.
“ECTEC along with its sister school WCTEC were invited to prepare and serve the entire meal as part of their training. Students at WCTEC prepared a very popular Louisiana dish, chicken and sausage gumbo with rice, while the students at ECTEC prepared and served potato salad and an apple dumpling dessert.
“Each group was responsible for planning, preparing and serving a menu item,” said Lannie Degeyter, the ECTEC ProStart instructor, “our students presented themselves with great professionalism.”
The Culinary/Chef Program, ProStart is open to juniors and seniors in High School. In order to gain a certification in this area, students must enroll as juniors and begin their internship and complete it in their senior year.
Joubert added, “This program links students, school and workplace together for one continuous learning experience. Students in the 11th and 12th grades learn all aspects of operating and managing a food service establishment.
The Eunice Career and Technical Education Center (ECTEC) offers programs and/or certification in several trade skills, including; Carpentry, Auto Mechanics, CNA, Medical Terminology, First Responder, Welding, Oil & Gas Production, and Culinary Arts.
ECTEC programs and activities are open to all students regardless of race, color, handicap, religion, creed, national origin, age or sex.
