Central Middle students Recycle

Central Middle School students took on a Recyclable project after visiting and learning more about recycables during a recent field trip to The Solid Waste in Washington and Recycle Center in Opelousas. Each student crafted and created using recyclable materials for their own projects. At school a room was filled with poster boards and projects of robots, a Christmas tree, a small refrigerator, Dr. Pepper Box robot, milk jug owls and much more. Pictured above from left are fifth-graders, Mallori Fontenot, Caroline Vienne, Caleb Domingue, E’mon Jones, MarKayla Edwards, Aalyiah Warren and Danny Droddy.

Pictured is just one table of their “Recyclable creative art.” Seen are: Dr. Pepper empty cardboard box, empty water bottles, alumnium foil, cow and owl plastic milk jugs.

Central Middle took on on a school-wide endeavor as a result of their experience during a recent field trip to Solid Waste in Washington and the Recycle Center in Opelousas. Fifth-graders completed phase 1 of the trip and sixth-grade students took the same field trip on Dec. 15 and 16. Coordinating school-wide trips were Janel Simien and Cynthia Hollier, teachers at Central Middle.
Principal R. Landry added, “Central Middle School students are part of a Top Gains School, yet again. This time, the gain is in regards to their enhanced knowledge of environmental awareness. Half of the students have already participated in a field trip to St. Landry Solid Waste Landfill located in Washington. The other half of the student body visited before the Christmas break. Along with a visit to the landfill, the students visited the Recycling Center in Opelousas.
“Students have gained much appreciation for landfills and recycling centers and all that they do to care for the environment.
As a follow-up of their field trip experience, fifth-graders at Central Middle created Recycling Art. The art consists of various different recyclable materials-(cardboard, small batteries, plastic bottles, soda cans, Tootsie roll canisters, Style-foam, Posterboard, paper, empty Juiceboxes and pouches, tree bark, tree branches, alumnium foil, plastic milk jugs, and much more.)
Students had to link materials which they chose for their projects to the 3Rs-Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
“They presented their art pieces to teachers and classmates and shared some interesting facts about materials they used.
As part of the agreement to the project, their “masterpieces” will be broken down and recycled at the Recycling Center.
