Gators sweep Jays
False River Academy proved too much for St. Edmund as the Gators grabbed a District 5-1A sweep Tuesday night in Eunice.
The Lady Gators earned a 54-34 win, while the Gators closed the nightcap with a 53-41 victory.
After buckets by St. Ed’s Abby Brown and Allison LaFleur to keep the game close, the Lady Gators went on a 9-0 run sparked by a trey from Olivia LeBlanc.
A baseline bucket by LaFleur was followed by seven points from FRA including a trey and a bucket by MacKenzie Foret.
The Lady Gators increased its 18-6 lead early in the second period as Foret scored eight straight points including another trey.
Brown scored underneath on an in-bounds pass to close the gap to 26-8 with 2:06 left in the half before four free throws by the Lady Gators.
St. Edmund’s Elissa David and FRA’s Logann Callahan exchanged late buckets as the Lady Gators took a 32-10 advantage into the break.
The Lady Jays opened the second half with a 6-3 surge aided by two baskets from Abby Miller and a drive in the lane by LaFleur.
A lay-up by LaFleur closed the gap to 39-18 before Callahan gave the Lady Gators a 41-18 lead into the fourth quarter.
The final period was highlighted by trips to the free throw line by both teams.
Kelli Richard and Miller scored in the lane as the Lady Jays closed the lead to 47-23.
After eight trips to the free throw line by the two teams, St. Edmund went on a 7-2 run to close the game - sparked by three points by Brown to go with buckets by Richard and Abby Miller.
FRA (10-13, 1-2) made 16-of-25 free throws, while St. Edmund (1-14, 1-1) made 6-of-22 at the charity stripe.
Brown led the Lady Jays with 10 points, while LaFleur and Miller both scored eight points.
Richard scored six points and David added two points.
Foret led False River Academy with 18 points, while Jaimie Knight scored 11 points and Callahan chipped in nine points.
St. Edmund closes the first half of District 5-1A play at home Friday night against rival Sacred Heart of Ville Platte.
FRA 53, SEH 41
The Blue Jays kept the game close early in the first quarter, sparked by seven points by William Chachere.
After St. Edmund grabbed a 9-7 lead midway through the period, the Gators went on an 8-2 run to close the quarter with a 17-11 lead.
A free throw by Jaque Richard, a drive in the lane by John Guillory and a baseline shot from Dylan Bieber helped the Jays close the gap to 21-16 with 2:59 left in the half.
The Gators hit two free throws to take a 23-16 margin into the locker room.
Beiber opened the third period with a put-back for the Jays, but the Gators went on a 5-0 run for a 10-point lead.
Richard scored on a second-chance bucket, Guillory drove the lane and Chachere scored inside as the Jays battled back to close the gap to 30-24.
Another inside bucket by Richard was answered by a 9-0 surge including a trey from Sam Allen who finished with 25 points for the Gators (8-9, 1-2).
Guillory hit a trey on an inbounds pass to close the third period gap to 42-29.
Guillory scored six points to open the fourth quarter as the Jays battled back to close the margin to 43-35.
Bieber later scored from the baseline to pull the Jays closer, 47-37, with 2:30 left in the game.
Guillory finished with a drive in the lane, while Alex Hunt added a late free throw for the 53-41 final.
Guillory led St. Edmund (2-14, 0-3) with 18 points, while Chachere chipped in nine points and Bieber added eight points.
The Blue Jays entertain rival Sacred Heart of Ville Platte (5-11, 2-1) Friday night.
In a non-district contest, Plainview grabbed a 63-53 win over the Jays.
Guillory led St. Edmund with 17 points, while Chachere had 13 points.
Drew Brown and Bieber each chipped in 10 points.
The St, Edmund junior varsity picked up their first win of the season as the Jays won, 30-20.
Jacob Thibodeaux led St. Edmund with seven points.
