NFL running back
NEW ORLEANS – Services are pending for former Tulane All-American and Minnesota Vikings running back Tommy Mason. He died Jan. 22 at age 75 in Newport Beach, Calif.
From Lake Charles, he was a All-American in 1960 and drafted first by the expansion Vikings in the 1961 NFL player selection. He was an All-Pro in three of the six years he played with the Vikings. He then played four years with the then-Los Angeles Rams and retired after a year with the Washington Redskins. He was a member of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and Halls of Fame at Tulane and the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
Survivors include his wife Karen and three sons.
Baseball hitting instructor, coach
LAFAYETTE – Services for baseball hitting instructor and noted coach Gerald “Jerry” Queen are pending. He died Jan. 21 at age 71.
He operated Strike Zone in Lafayette and for more than 20 years was a high school teacher, coach and director of athletics in Atlanta, Ga., winning five state championships. He was Georgia coach of the year in seven different years and a member of the Atlanta Dugout Hall of Fame.
Survivors include his wife Rose and two step-children.
