Lady Jays grab win over CHPC
It was a defensive struggle, but the Lady Jays scored enough on offense as St. Edmund grabbed a 39-25 District 5-1A win Tuesday night over Catholic High of Pointe Coupee.
St. Edmund (2-15, 2-4) jumped to a 6-5 lead, sparked by four points from Abby Brown.
Seven points from Payton Crowell and a put-back by Maggie Larrivere increased the Lady Jays’ lead to 15-6 midway through the second period.
Kelli Richard, Elissa David and Abby Miller completed the scoring in the quarter to give St. Edmund a 21-9 advantage at the break.
The third quarter was dominated by the Lady Jays as St. Edmund exploded for a 11-3 run.
Jami LeBouef scored on a jumper then nailed a trey for the Lady Jays, while Camile Leger and David added buckets as St. Edmund led 32-12.
Catholic High of Pointe Coupee (2-17, 0-6) managed a 13-7 fourth-quarter surge to make the game interesting.
Kennedi Broussard opened the period with a trey for the Lady Hornets.
Larrivere and Victoria McGee responded with bucket for the Lady Jays before Broussard drained another trey.
Broussard kept going with six more points in the period to finish with 16 points.
Allison Lafleur scored in the closing minute as the Lady Jays earned their second district win.
Crowell finished with seven points for the Lady Jays, while David and LeBouef each chipped in five points.
Richard, Brown and Larriviere all scored four points.
St. Edmund travels to North Central on Friday.
CHPC 60, SEH boys 50
The Blue Jays held a six point lead at the break, but Catholic High of Pointe Coupee rallied for a 60-50 win over St. Edmund.
Six point straight points from Cullen Brown and a lay-up by John Ross Guillory gave St. Edmund (2-16, 0-5)a 8-6 lead midway through the period.
CHPC (6-12, 2-3) responded as Troy Pichon scored six points in the lane and Sam Guidroz drained a trey to give the Hornets a 15-8 lead heading into the second period.
The second quarter was the Blue Jays’ best eight minutes as St. Edmund went on a 22-9 run.
Drew Brown, William Chachere and Alex Hunt all hit treys in that run.
Chachere who scored 11 points in the period, scored six points inside in the final 1:28 of the half to help push the Jays to 30-24 lead at intermission.
The Hornets stormed back in the third period with a 21-10 run to take control of the game.
Buckets from Hunt and Guillory helped keep the Jays ahead, 36-31 midway through the frame.
CHPC’s Pichon scored nine points in the period as the Hornets grabbed a 40-37 advantage.
Chachere’s three-pointer was answered by a drive in the lane by Pichon as the Hornets held a 45-40 lead into the fourth period.
Chachere continued to keep the Jays close as he put in to two strong buckets early in the final quarter to close the gap to 49-44.
Cullen Brown scored in the lane as St. Edmund battled to stay alive, 51-46 with more than five minutes left in the contest.
A 9-0 run by the Hornets sealed the game, sparked by five points from Jared Clinton to push CHPC ahead, 60-46.
Cullen Brown and Drew Brown scored the final points of the contest as the Jays fell by 10 points.
Chachere led St. Edmund with 16 points, while Cullen Brown chipped in 12 and Guillory added 10 points.
Pichon led the Hornets with 25 points, while Lucas Patin contributed 10 points.
