Bengals drop three at Tournament of Champions
SUGARLAND, Texas - The Bengals faced two undefeated teams in their final two games of the Tournament of Champions and LSU Eunice was outscored 17-0 and limited to five hits over 12 innings.
On Saturday, it was a scoreless battle for five innings before Blinn College (5-0) surged for seven runs over the last two frames for a 7-0 win.
Ben Braymer went 5.2 innings for the Bengals, striking out six and walked four with three earned runs on four hits.
Erin Baldwin finished the outing and struck out and allowed two earned runs on four hits.
Blinn’s Seth Ballew went the distance as he struck out seven, walked two and scattered two hits over seven innings.
Steven Sensley (1-for-3) and pinch hitter David LaFleur (1-for-1) recorded the two hits for the Bengals.
Will Watson and Sam Walley drew walks but neither could score.
In Sunday’s 10-0 loss to Howard College (6-0), the Bengals were held to three hits over five innings.
The Hawks exploded for six runs in the top of the first and then added a run in the next two innings before closing the romp with two more runs in the top of the fifth.
Sam Walley was handed the loss as he struck out four, walked one and allowed eight earned runs on seven hits.
Brandon Maine had a complete-game win for Howard as he struck out eight, walked two and scattered three hits.
Brennan Bozeman went 1-for-3 for LSU Eunice, while Trey Caswell (1-for-1) and Janson Bourque (1-for-1) had the other two hits.
LSU Eunice entertain St. Charles College in a three-game series beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday with 1 p.m. starts on Saturday and Sunday.
LSUE 4, NMC 0; PSC 3, LSUE 2
HOUSTON, Texas - The fifth-ranked LSU Eunice Bengals split their first two games of the Tournament of Champions Friday at San Jacinto College.
The Bengals opened the day with a 4-0 win over New Mexico College before falling 3-2 to Pensacola State College.
LSU Eunice took a 1-0 lead in the top of the over New Mexico when Cade Stone reached base on a wild throw, stole second and scored on another New Mexico error.
The Bengals pushed ahead 2-0 in the top of the second when Jesse Lee walked, stole second and scored on Stone’s single to third.
LSU Eunice added a run in the top of the fifth when Madison Nickens walked, stole second and scored when Joe Trahan’s hit was dropped.
The Bengals added an insurance run in the top of the sixth begun when Jordan Romero and Trey Caswell were both hit by pitches. Brennan Bozeman’s hit was bobbled to allow Romero to score from third.
Mitch Sewald improved to 2-0 with the win as he struck out three, walked one and allowed four hits in five innings of work. Zack Hamilton went the final two innings with three strikeouts, three walks but did not allow a hit.
Stone went 1-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored for the Bengals.
PSC 3, LSUE 2
Pensacola State College scored the decisive run in the bottom of the fifth as the Pirates grabbed the one-run win over the Bengals.
M.J. Morrisette singled to left, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored the go-ahead run when catcher Chase Crump doubled to left center field.
LSU Eunice two runs in the top of the second begun when Steven Sensley led off with a walk and scored on an error.
Joe Trahan doubled to left and touched home plate on Stone’s sacrifice fly to right field.
Pensacola (4-1) closed the gap to 2-1 in the bottom of the second when desginated hitter Derek Fritz walked and scored on Tate Sweatt’s double to centerfield.
Trailing by a run, LSU Eunice (3-2) threatened in the sixth and seventh innings when Trahan and Stone singled but the Bengals were held scoreless both times.
Trahan went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Stone went 1-for-2 with a RBI.
