Bobcats win two in tourney, fall to LaGrange
The LaGrange High Gators forced the Eunice High Bobcats into an extra inning and that proved decisive in a District 4-4A encounter played Tuesday night at Bobcat Field.
The Bobcats will host Rayne as district play continues tonight at 6 p.m.
The Gators broke open a 6-6 tie with an eighth inning explosion that included six runs and six base hits to claim a 12-6 victory.
LaGrange took an early 1-0 lead with the help of an error and a run-scoring double by starting pitcher Jeremiah West.
The Gators added two runs in the second inning for a 3-0 advantage.
But the Bobcats (10-7, 2-1) scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-3 lead. Gunner Fontenot singled and scored on a single by Wes Hebert. Logan Manuel came home on a sacrifice fly by Caleb Taylor to cut the lead to 3-2. Hebert and A. P. Sonnier, who drew a walk, would score on a double by Christian Lejeune.
The Gators tied the game in the fourth, but the Cats regained a 5-4 lead in the fifth on a solo home run by Wes Hebert, his fourth of the season.
The Gators scored twice in the top of the seventh, taking a 6-5 lead. But the Cats would tie the score in the bottom of the inning after Hebert walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored as Taylor reached on an error. The Cats had two runners in scoring position but failed to push a run across, sending the game into extra innings.
The Gators, highlighted by a two-run double by Donovan Murray, put the game away with their six-run explosion. The Gators improved to 8-2 overall and to 2-0 in district. The Bobcats fell to 10-7 overall and to 2-1 in district play.
In the Ascension Episcopal Tournament on Friday in Youngsville, Christian Lejeune pitched six innings of shutout baseball and his teammates provided three early runs in support as the Bobcats claimed a 6-2 victory over the Delcambre High Panthers.
Lejeune (2-1) scattered five hits, walked only two, and struck out four before being relieved by A. P. Sonnier in the bottom of the seventh inning with one out.
Sonnier retired the final two batters on a fly out and a strikeout to end the game.
The Bobcats took a 2-0 lead in the second inning against Panthers’ starter Chris Borel. Sonnier singled to open the inning but was forced out on a grounder by Lejeune. Caleb Taylor singled and Borel hit Alec Trosclair with a pitch to load the bases. Gunner Fontenot singled home two runs to give the Cats the early lead.
The Cats added a third run in the third inning on a double by Wes Hebert and a single by Lejeune. The Cats added a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh for a 6-0 lead. Sonnier and Lejeune had two hits apiece to lead the offense.
On Sunday, the Bobcats used an offensive explosion to claim an 18-12 victory over the Loreauville High Tigers.
The Bobcats opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Logan Manuel singled and scored on a home run by Jordan Comeaux. The Tigers cut the lead to 2-1 in the second as Max Dugas doubled and scored a single by Connor Landry.
The Cats widened their lead with four runs in the third. Gunner Fontenot singled and Manuel doubled with one out. Comeaux and Wes Hebert drew walks before A. P. Sonnier’s two-run double. The Cats added four more runs in the fourth thanks to three walks, a hit batsman, and a run-scoring by Sonnier for a 10-5 lead.
The Tigers responded with a five-run fifth inning, led by Kylin Broussard’s two-run double. The Tigers had two runners on base with two out in the inning, but Bobcat reliever Brandon Martel retired Malik Washington on a fly out to center to end the inning.
The Cats finally put the game away in their sixth as they sent 12 batters to the plate and scored eight runs for an 18-10 lead. Caleb Taylor finished the game on the mound for the Cats, allowing just two runs in the final two innings to preserve the mound win for Martel and secure the win for the Bobcats. The Bobcats improved their record to 10-6 while Loreauville fell to 9-4 on the season.
