Bengals ready for strong finish
Even with a 31-8 record, LSU Eunice head baseball coach Jeff Willis is confiident the best is yet to come for his Bengals as they head into the final month of the regular season.
But injuries could play a part that Willis doesn’t want to see happen.
“I like where we are but I don’t like all the injuries,” Willis said. “We have yet to have our whole team completely healthy.
“We have to get healthy and make sure our guys stay away from injuries the last month of the season.”
Infielder Will Watson (broken hand), as well as pitchers Haden Shipman (elbow), Landon Presnaall (shoulder) and Clay Moffitt (elbow) are all dealing with injuries.
“We need to get healthy as well head into the playoffs,” he said.
Willis said the 2015 season is the toughest they have had, but they are doing very well with 31 wins.
“We haven’t had our whole team one time this spring,” he said, “But it will be a tough stretch for us if we don’t get healthy.”
Willis said the good thing about the injuries is it has allowed other players to step up and perform.
“We have seen other guys take on some roles and that will benefit us when get to the playoffs and we need some other guys to stand up and shoulder a load from time to time.”
Over the next three weeks, the Bengals will travel to Bossier Parish Community College, Alabama Southern and Coastal Bend College.
“We are looking to build more team chemistry over the trips,” Willis said. “This allows the guys to become closer.”
Willis said he is pleased with the efforts of second baseman Janson Bourque, shortstop Brennan Bozeman, third baseman Nick Coomes, catcher Jordan Romero, first baseeman Steven Sensley as well as pitchers Mitch Sewald, Ben Braymer, Sam Walley and Zach Hamilton.
“We don’t have an easy out in our lineup,” Willis said of his hitters. “They are never going to be out of it because they can put up runs very quickly.”
Willis said he is pleased with the team as they have worked hard and they deserve to win.
“If they fall short on the scoreboard they are not happy,” the coach said. “They take losing personal.”
