New garbage cans to be delivered

New, blue garbage carts are due to start arriving in Eunice on Monday, St. Landry Solid Waste District officials said.
The carts, which allow trucks operated by one person to pick up garbage, have already been delivered in Opelousas and the rural area between Opelousas and Eunice.
Katry Martin, district executive director, said the carts should go into use by June 15.
Delivery of 6,500 of the 96-gallon carts begins Monday and includes the Morrow area and along La. 31.
Sunset and Grand Coteau areas are also included in the delivery phase that totals about 10,500 carts.
Velton Stelly, district inspector, said by end of the process close to 40,000 carts will be delivered to residences in the parish.
Garbage collection is contracted to Progressive Waste Solutions.
The new carts have met with opposition from rural residents who complain the carts are not big enough for their once-a-week collection.
There is a twice weekly garbage collection in incorporated areas.
As part of the changeover, Progessive plans to bring online trucks that burn natural gas produced from methane at the parish landfill.
