Trio celebrates on field of dreams
ENID, Oklahoma – David LaFleur and Trey Caswell have been life-long friends at St. Edmund, while Trenon Trosclair spent his high school athletic career at Eunice High.
The trio now can proudly call themselves champions, as LSU Eunice won its fifth national title last weekend at David Allen Memorial Stadium in Enid, Oklahoma.
LaFleur and Caswell were both red-shirted their freshmen year before seeing limited action last season.
“This a dream come true,” LaFleur said after the championship game. “I grew up always watching LSUE baseball and we followed them to the World Series.
“To be able to put this uniform on and win a championship myself is surreal.”
LaFleur was named the World Series MVP and the Elite Hitter as he slammed six home runs in six games, including three in two games Saturday against Western Oklahoma State College.
LaFleur hit .391 for the series with nine RBI.
For the season, LaFleur hit .326 with nine home runs, 12 doubles and 30 RBI.
LaFleur will head to Southern Arkansas University this fall.
Caswell was named a team captain twice and spent time at second, third and shortstop at different times this season.
“Growing up in Eunice, all I ever wanted to do was to play for the Bengals,” Caswell said. “I got to do it and it was an awesome year.”
In the series, Caswell hit .200 with two doubles, three RBI, six runs scored, three walks and three hit by pitch.
On the season, Caswell finished with a .292 batting average, including five doubles, a triple, 25 RBI to go with 17 walks and 11 hit by pitch.
Caswell now heads to LSU Alexandria.
Trosclair began his college career as a defensive back at Southeastern Louisiana University but concussions forced him to give up football.
Trosclair returned to Eunice and worked to get playing time with the Bengals.
“It is amazing to be a part of a championship team,” Trosclair said. “I am glad to play a part to help us win.
Trosclair was a pinch runner and pinch hitter before working his way into the lineup as an outfielder.
“I wanted to be a leader in the dugout when I wasn’t playing because a lot of the older guys were out in the field,” Trosclair said. “It was a great team effort as everybody worked together to get it done.”
For the series, Trosclair hit .222 in four games with four runs scored and a walk.
For the season, Trosclair hit .356 with two home runs and a triple along with 20 RBI, six walks and seven hit by pitch in 30 games played.
The former Eunice High standout plans to return to the Bengals next season.
