12 Bengals ready for next level
This could be one of the best sophomore groups to ever sign scholarships after finishing their Bengal baseball careers as NJCAA Division II national champions.
Twelve former LSU Eunice players are moving on to the next level, inlcuding several signing with Division I programs.
“Most of the programs they signed with are Division I schools,” LSU Eunice head coach Jeff Willis said. “There are several top 25 teams on that list.
“We have guys to going to the highest level of college baseball and very storied programs,” the coach said. “There is a lot of potential as they have succeeded very well in the Bengal program.”
Catcher Jordan Romero (. 321 BA, 13 2B, 6 HR, 33 RBI, 25 BB) is heading to LSU, while first baseman/outfielder Steven Sensley (.374 BA, 11 2B, 4 3B, 21 HR, 80 RBI, 35 BB) will continue at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
Sensley, a left-handed-hitter, was selected by Tampa Bay in the 38th round with the 1,138th overall choice in the Major League draft but chose stay in college.
Right-handed pitcher Mitch Sewald (14-1, 2.08 ERA, 100 K, 25 BB, 23 ER, 99.2 IP) has signed with Texas Christian University, while left-hander Ben Braymer (9-1, 2.57 ERA, 138 K, 29 BB, 27 ER, 94.2 IP) is heading to Auburn University.
Untility player Sam Walley (11-1, 2.35 ERA, 85 K, 24 BB, 65.0 IP; .347 BA, 2 BB, 3 HR, 23 RBI, 7 BB) has signed with Southern Mississippi, while shortstop Brennan Bozeman (.315 BA, 11 2B, 2 HR, 25 RBI, 42 BB) is heading to the University of Central Florida.
Second baseman Trey Caswell (.292 BA, 5 2B, 1 3B, 25 RBI, 17 BB) is going to LSU Alexandria, while outfielder Cade Stone (.344 BA, 15 2B, 3 3B, 4 HR, 51 RBI, 26 BB) is heading to the University of Louisiana - Monroe and right-handed pitcher Zac Hamilton (5-1, 0.99 ERA, 45 K, 9 BB, 4 ER, 36.1 IP) will continue his career at Louisiana Tech.
Right-handed pitcher Hayden Guidry (1-2, 5.82 ERA, 26 K, 9 BB, 14 ER, 21.2 IP) is heading to McNeese State University.
Outfielder David Scott LaFleur (.326 BA, 12 2B, 9 HR, 30 RBI, 27 BB) will continue playing at Southern Arkansas.
Outfielder Madison Nickens (.289 BA, 9 2B, 2 3B, 6 HR, 37 RBI) has signed with the University of Maryland.
Former Bengal Hayden Shipman is planning to undergo Navy Seal training.
“As a junior college program one of our main jobs as a coaching staff is to develop the players to help them reach the highest level of baseball that they can reach.”
Willis said he keeps in contact with his former players and is excited when he sees them succeed on the field and in their personal lives.
“I only have them for two years and about the time we really get to know each other they are leaving,” he said. “That is always tough.
“But I am excited to know their best days are ahead of them as they head to a higher level of baseball and go on to earn their batchelor degrees or heading to graduate school.”
