Bobcats maul Tigers in opener
The Eunice High Bobcats opened the 2015 season Friday night with a 48-0 victory over the Opelousas High Tigers in action at Bobcat Stadium.
Coach Paul Trosclair’s Bobcats took control of the contest in the first quarter as they scored four touchdowns in four different ways. The Cats scored on a pass play, an interception return, a punt return, and a run from scrimmage.
The Cats opened the scoring on their first play from scrimmage when senior quarterback Alex Richard with Georrein Dupre on a 66-yard pass for a touchdown.
After the Tigers picked up a first down on their initial possession, the Cats’ Dashawn Vigers returned an interception 46 yards for a score. Later in the quarter, Dupre ran 18 yards to climax a Bobcat scoring drive that was aided by a 15-yard penalty against the Tigers.
The final of the four touchdowns came when senior Travis Godfrey returned a punt 42 yards for a score. Senior Wes Hebert made all four PAT kicks to account for the 28-0 lead.
The best chance for the Tigers to score came in the second quarter when Christopher Boutte intercepted a Jaden Brasseaux pass and returned it 74 yards before being run down and tackled by Nick Powell at the Eunice 11-yard line.
The Tigers managed to advance to the 5-yard line on three running plays, but went for a 23-yard field goal. A poor snap from center led to a missed try, keeping the Cats on top by 28-0 heading into halftime.
The Tigers received the second half kickoff but were forced to punt on fourth down. The Cats took possession at the Tigers’ 43 and used four running plays to reach the end zone. Sophomore Ian George ran twice for gains of 13 and 18 before Powell scored the touchdown with a five-yard run. Hebert kicked the PAT for a 35-0 lead.
On their next possession, the Cats added a touchdown on a Richard to Godfrey pass covering 26 yards. Hebert added the PAT for a 42-0 lead.
In the fourth quarter, the Cats drove 60 yards in five plays for a touchdown. Freshman running back Avery Lee ran four times for 55 yards on the drive, including a 22-yard run for the score.
Austin Manuel’s PAT kick failed to keep the Bobcat lead at 48-0.
The Bobcats rolled up over 300 rushing yards against the Tigers. George led the way with 102 yards on nine carries, with Lee adding 68 on six attempts. Dupre had 46 yards on three carries and Darin Serie added 40 yards on six attempts. Powell finished with eight carries for 39 yards.
Shaun Charles led the Tigers’ offense with 54 yards on 22 carries. Steven Edwards added 12 yards on five attempts.
Former Bobcat assistant coach Dwight Collins made his head coaching debut on the Opelousas High sidelines.
Eunice High (1-0) travels to Jennnings this Friday.
