Blue Jays brace for Viking attack
The St. Edmund defense recorded a shutout against Iota last week after allowing 68 points in their season opener against Northwest.
While scoring 32 points and putting up 375 yards of total offense against the Raiders, Iota held the Jays to 251 yards on the night.
St. Edmund head coach Thomas David is hopeful both the offense and defense excels Friday as Opelousas Catholic visits Blue Jay Field.
“We have to execute on offense a lot better to be successful going forward,” David said. “When we get opportunities in the red zone we have to put points on the board.”
David said he was proud of the shutout win over Iota.
“We had our back to the wall several times and found a way to get our defense off the field with either turnovers or stops on fourth down.
“That was a big turnaround than what happened the week before.”
OC (1-1) fell 32-20 to Central Catholic of Morgan City after opening the season with a 28-7 win over Port Barre.
OC allowed 279 total yards but finished with a balanced attack of 159 yards rushing and 105 yards through the air.
Viking quarterback David Labbe scored on a 80-yard run in the first quarter.
Labbe connected with Aaron Miller for a 6- and 46-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter against CCMC.
“They do a good job running the ball and their quarterback is a good athlete,” David said of Labbe.
“They focus their offense around what he can do.”
While the Vikings will attack on the ground, the Blue Jays have seen success throwing the football so far this season.
Drake Brunet has completed 29-of-69 passes for 446 yards with five touchdowns and three intereceptions.
“If we can protect him and catch the ball better then his numbers will get a lot better,” David said.
“I think he is doing a good job and he will only get better.”
David said the game against the Class 2-A Vikings could have a positive outcome.
“If we can execute we give ourselves a chance to win,” David said. “We need to protect the football and make them earn what they get.”
