13 checks stolen from the Bayou Mallet Drainage District

Two men were arrested Tuesday for stealing 13 checks from the Bayou Mallet Drainage District of Acadia Parish and then cashing some of them, Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot reported.
“The checks stared popping up in town in various places and they were determined to be forged checks,” Fontenot said.
“We learned that the checks and the computer they were being printed from were stolen,” he said.
Thirteen checks from the drainage district were stolen and five checks had surfaced, he said.
“The one I saw was for $500,” Fontenot said. “I think they were pretty much in the $500 range.”
Arrested Tuesday were:
Christopher Higginbotham, 32, 100 block of Suzie Drive, Eunice. Monetary instrument abuse and felony theft.
Camellus Keith Meyers Jr., 23, 1500 block of Hundley Road, Ville Platte. Monetary instrument abuse and felony theft.
Bail has been set at $15,000 for both men.
There may be more arrests in the case, he said.
