Undefeated Bobcats, Gents battle
Even though it is just the fourth week of the high school football season, there will be a playoff atmosphere Friday when Crowley visits Eunice High.
The Gents (3-0) are the eighth-ranked team in Class 4-A, while the Bobcats (3-0) are No. 10 in Class 3-A.
“They will be the most explosive offense we will see,” Eunice head coach Paul Trosclair said. “Our players know it will be a challenge.”
Crowley rolled up 586 yards of total offense as running back Ty’von Griffin gained 177 yards on 23 carries and scored three times in the Gents’ 50-49 win over Cecilia.
“He has been running over everyone,” Trosclair said. “But he is not their only weapon to worry about.
“Their quarterback (Pate Broussard) is the key to making everything happen.
“He does a super job of running the show.”
Eunice rolled up 431 yards of total offense in Eunice’s 40-18 win over St. Martinville.
Bobcat quarterback Alex Richard completed 15-of-18 passes for 292 yards
“Alex has been fantastic and making good judgement,” Trosclair said. “He has been on the money with a good touch.”
Cecilia’s Raymond Calais gained 263 yards on 29 carries and scored five times against Crowley last week.
“He is the one of the fastest runners in the state,” Trosclair said of Calais. “You can’t judge Crowley’s defense off of his performance.”
The Gents opened the season with win over Iowa (31-13) and Westlake (34-3) before last week’s thriller over Cecilia.
“We know there will be some yards gained,” Trosclair said. “How many times can we force them to punt or make a mistake - that will be the key.”
Eunice has exploded for at least 40 points a game in their first three wins over Opelousas (48-0), Jennings (44-28) and St. Martinville (40-18).
“Their secondary gave up some big plays and ours prevented the big plays for the most part,” Trosclair said of the win over St. Martinville. “Our defensive line really rushed the quarterback when we needed it late in the game.”
The Bobcats have been known historically as a running team out of the Wing T, but so far this season Eunice has a balanced attack.
The Bobcats have gained 857 yards on the ground (11 TDs) and 519 yards through the air (6 TDs).
“We are more versatile than we were last year,” the coach said. “They will have to defend the whole field and not just stop the run.”
While the offense has been flying, Trosclair said he is proud of his defense.
“Our defense is playing well and is a very aggressive group,” he said. “They get after it pretty well.”
