Crowley runs past Bobcats
The Crowley High Gents converted two Eunice High Bobcat turnovers into scores in the second quarter take control of the game on their way to a 34-10 victory.
The Bobcats lost a fumble on the first play of the second quarter which was returned by Terrell Thomas 33 yards for a touchdown. On the Bobcats’ next possession, John Marceaux stepped in front of an Alex Richard pass and returned the interception 55 yards for a touchdown. Kicker David Romero was true on both PATs to give the Gents a 21-3 lead with 7:57 left in the first half.
The Bobcats started the game with a 51-yard kickoff return by Wesley Hebert to the Crowley 41, but penalties would derail the drive and force the Cats to punt.
On the Gents’ first play from scrimmage, senior running back Ty’Von Griffin fumbled at the end of a 23-yard run and Dashawn Vigers recovered for the Cats at the Gents’ 47. Alex Richard teamed with Terryl Poullard on a pass down to the Crowley 10, but the Gents held the Cats out of the end zone, forcing Hebert to kick a 23-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead with 5:40 left in the first quarter.
The Gents responded quickly as Thomas returned the ensuing kickoff 38 yards to set up a Crowley score. Griffin redeemed himself for the fumble by scoring on a 9-yard run. Romero kicked the PAT to put Crowley on top 7-3 at the 4:43 mark of the opening quarter.
The next two Crowley touchdowns came as a result of the aforementioned Bobcat turnovers, which put the Gents in control by a 21-3 margin.
The Cats put together a drive late in the second quarter, taking advantage of a poor Crowley punt. Richard teamed with Poullard for a 33-yard pass play to get the Cats down to the Crowley 20. But the Cats’ drive stalled when they couldn’t convert a fourth-and-nine from the 20.
Crowley took possession and drove down the field on the strength of quarterback Pate Broussard’s arm. Broussard would complete three passes to move the Gents to the Eunice 30. With 39 seconds left in the half, Broussard connected with Jaq’Co Price for a 30-yard touchdown. Romero missed the PAT kick, but the Gents held a 27-3 lead.
The Gents increased their lead to 34-3 in the third quarter as Griffin covered 75 yards on the ground in three plays following the second half kickoff. Griffin capped the drive with a 49-yard run and Romero converted the PAT.
The Cats responded with a drive to the Crowley 38, but the turnover bug hit the Cats again. This time it was a lost fumble by Richard as he was sacked for a 4-yard loss.
The Cats would get their lone touchdown in the fourth quarter with a three-play 67-yard drive. The scoring play came when Richard found Travis Godfrey down the right sideline to complete a 65-yard scoring play. Hebert kicked the PAT to cut the lead to 34-10 with 8:56 remaining in the game.
Eunice High head coach Paul Trosclair felt his players made too many mental mistakes. “We had a total meltdown mentally in executing on both defense and offense. We need to do a better job as we go forward.”
Eunice takes on Rayne for homecoming Friday.
