LSUE enrollment down 8.4%
Fall enrollment at Louisiana State University at Eunice dropped 8.4 percent from a year ago to 2,509 students, according to enrollment numbers on the LSUE website.
This year’s fall enrollment is the lowest in a decade. In 2013, fall enrollment was 2,673 students. In 2014, fall enrollment rose to 2,788, a 4 percent increase from the previous year.
Enrollment is off 27 percent from the 10-year high of 3,431 in the fall of 2010.
The majority of LSUE’s students this fall come from St. Landry Parish, 625 students. Acadia Parish accounts for 425 students, Evangeline Parish, 268, and Lafayette Parish, 165.
LSUE historically draws heaviest from those four parishes, but the numbers are off from the enrollment high in 2010.
In 2010, there were 771 students from St. Landry Parish; 496 students from Acadia Parish; 375 students from Evangeline Parish; and 255 students from Lafayette Parish.
In 2000, fall enrollment was 2,742. There were 962 students from St. Landry Parish; 599 students from Acadia Parish; 359 students from Evangeline Parish; and 246 students from Lafayette Parish.
LSU Eunice reported having 1,603 freshman, 525 sophomores (30 plus credit hours) and 380 unclassified students, which include students with more than 60 credits.
Students from 48 parishes are enrolled in LSU Eunice classes, including off-campus and online classes. Parishes with 20 or more students attending the university this fall are St. Landry, 625; Acadia, 425; Evangeline, 268; Lafayette, 165; Rapides, 119; Vermilion, 93; East Baton Rouge, 61; Calcasieu, 52; Allen, 56; Iberia, 47; Jeff Davis, 47; Avoyelles, 46; and St. Martin, 38.
The university has 278 preparatory students.
LSU Eunice has 1,261 full-time students (those student carrying academic loads of 12 semester hours or more) and 1,247 part-time students.
LSUE’s enrollment numbers became final on the 14th day of class, which was Sept. 11.
LSU President F. King Alexander announced at a Sept. 18 LSU Board of Supervisors meeting that enrollment increased at the Baton Rouge campus and for all LSU campuses across the state.
Enrollment is 45,202 students, surpassing last year’s total of 44,242 at all campuses.
LSU of Alexandria brought in 3,104 students, making it the largest enrollment in the history of the university, passing 3,093 students enrolled in 2002, the news release stated. LSU Shreveport saw a growth rate of more than 10 percent in the number of full-time freshmen, and total enrollment for students at LSUS has seen an 8 percent increase to 4,383 students.
The LSU news release did not give an enrollment number for LSUE.
“A special thanks goes to all of our enrollment management staff for their hard work and recruiting efforts, along with all of our faculty, staff and students for helping to make LSU one of the most desirable places to get an education,” Alexander said. “No matter if a student is in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Shreveport, Alexandria or Eunice, we are committed to providing the resources needed for them to be successful and receive an LSU degree.”
The 5,624 freshmen enrolled at the flagship campus ranks only behind the 5,725 freshmen enrolled in 2012; 5,700 freshmen enrolled in 2004; and 5,655 in 2014 as the largest entering classes at LSU.
The flagship campus’ overall enrollment of 31,527 represents a 2 percent increase from last year and the largest enrollment at LSU since fall 2004. These enrollment figures include students from both the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center and LSU Online program, in addition to students enrolled on the main campus.
