Bobcats down Bulldogs
VILLE PLATTE – The Eunice High Bobcats opened District 5-3A play here Friday night with a 34-0 victory over the Ville Platte Bulldogs.
Coach Paul Trosclair’s Bobcats got two touchdowns apiece from seniors Wesley Hebert and Nick Powell to lead the way to the victory. The other touchdown came on an Alex Richard pass to Dashawn Vigers.
The Bobcats took the early lead after forcing a punt from the Bulldogs following the game’s initial kickoff. The Bulldogs managed a first down on their possession but the Cats forced a punt, taking over the football at their own 33-yard line.
Georrein Dupre ran for nine yards and Powell picked up a first down carry of one yard. Hebert had the next carry, turning the corner around the right side and setting off on a 57-yard touchdown run. The PAT kick failed, but the Cats led 6-0 at the 8:14 mark of the first quarter.
The Bobcat defense gave up just three yards to the Bulldogs on the ensuing possession and a short punt gave the Cats the ball at the Ville Platte 49.
Richard teamed with Travis Godfrey on a 15-yard pass play to open the drive and Powell added a 14-yard run, but the drive stalled inside the 5-yard line and Hebert missed wide right on a field goal try.
The Eunice High defense got the ball right back after three Bulldog plays which went for only nine yards. Hebert fielded the punt for the Cats and advanced it 13 yards to the Bulldogs’ 39.
It took the Cats just three plays to score. Powell ran for seven, Dupre got off a 30-yard run, and Powell powered in from the 2-yard line for the touchdown. Dupre ran for the two-point conversion to give the Cats a 14-0 lead with 39 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs were forced to punt once again after just three plays following the kickoff. The Cats took possession at their own 47.
The Bobcats went to the air as Richard completed passes of six and 14 yards to Terryl Poullard before finding Vigers for a 39-yard touchdown. The PAT kick was blocked, but the Cats had extended their lead to 20-0.
The Bulldogs finally got a drive together in their ensuing possession, driving from their 23 to their 45 before having to punt. Rodricas Fontenot completed a 13-yard pass to Kaybrien Ardoin for a first down before the drive stalled.
Hebert would return a punt 67 yards with only 27.2 seconds left in the half to put another touchdown on the board for the Bobcats. The Cats converted the two-point PAT on a Richard pass to Godfrey to extend their lead to 28-0.
The final touchdown for the Cats came with 5:05 left in the third quarter. It was set up by the defense on an interception by Aiyh Johnson at the Ville Platte 13-yard line. Powell scored on a one-yard run to make it a 34-0 advantage after the PAT pass failed.
The Bulldogs had their best drive of the night in the fourth quarter as they drove from their own 15 to the Eunice 24 in 13 plays. Daylon Jones, who finished the game with 25 carries for 90 yards, led the way for the Bulldogs, but the Cats held the Bulldogs at bay with a fourth down stop with under two minutes to play.
The Bobcats will continue district action next Friday as they host the Northwest High Raiders.
