More than 900 St. Landry Parish voters have turned out so far during the early voting for the Oct. 24 elections, according to Cheryl Milburn, St. Landry Parish Registrar of Voters.
“It’s been real steady. We had 528 voters Saturday and 387 on Monday,” Milburn said. “Today (Tuesday) steady but there are not as many as we had at this time yesterday.”
Early voting began last Saturday, and voting hours are 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. now through Saturday.
“If there were not so many races with unopposed candidates, we would have pulled more voters,” Milburn said. “The sheriff, parish president, clerk of court and assessor were all unopposed. All those elections would have effected turn out this election. The impact would be greater if there were elections in other offices.”
‘”I think things will pick up a little at the end of the week. I think Friday and Saturday will be busy.”
Milburn encouraged the parish’s voters to come out and cast their vote.
“It is so, so important,” she said. “One vote can make a difference. It’s (voting) is one of the only freedoms we have to voice our opinions. A big or small election, cast your vote.”
Almost 900 votes have also been cast in Acadia Parish, according to Billie Myers, Acadia Parish Registrar of Voters.
“It’s going very well,” Myers said. “Saturday, we had 450 voters and Monday we had 436. It’s been steady, no mad rush. I anticipate a lot of voters tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday (today), before the Rice Festival gets in full swing. Once the Rice Festival starts, people will have a little trouble getting here.”
Early voting hours in Acadia Parish are also 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. each night now through Saturday. The Rice Festival Children’s Parade will be at 1 p.m. on Friday and the Grand Parade will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
