'Lights On After School' event set Oct. 22

Eunice Elementary will celebrate the 16th annual Lights on After School on Thursday. Lights on After School is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool. The effort has become a hallmark of Afterschool movement and generates media coverage across the country each year.
The theme of this year’s program is “Lights on Literacy AfterSchool.” The program will take place at Eunice Elementary at 4:15 p.m and will highlight literacy and what makes each child special.
Councilwoman Germaine Simpson will present the proclamation from the city. School Board member Mary Ellen Donatto will be the guest speaker.
Teachers LaRhonda Simpson and Michelle Stelly are encouraging the public to attend, “We are asking everyone to come out and support the afterschool alliance which offers students homework help, technology, MYON Reader program, literacy activities, numeracy activities, health, nutrition, art and recreation.
“This year we would like the community to donate one children’s book which will be given to the Women and Children shelters in our community. We have a total of 35 students in our program. “
