Blue Jays fall in Turkey tourney
VILLE PLATTE – St. Edmund and the Pine Prairie battled to the final buzzer Tuesday before Kayla Lazard hit a lay-up with five seconds left to lift the Lady Panthers to a 42-41 win over the Lady Jays.
St. Edmund’s Camille Leger scored the first two buckets for the Lady Jays before Pine Prairie rallied for a 9-4 lead.
A lay-up by Sydney Thibodeaux and a baseline bucket from Maggie Laverriere gave the Lady Jays a 8-7 advantage with 2:30 left in the first period.
The Lady Panthers answered with a 5-0 run including a three-pointer by Brandy Manuel as Pine Prairie took a 12-8 lead into the second period.
The Lady Jays opened the second period with a 9-2 surge, aided by a steal by Abby Miller and a trey from Victoria McGee as St. Edmund pushed ahead 17-14 with 3:00 left.
The Lady Panthers closed the half with a 5-3 run, but the Lady Jays led 20-19 at the break.
Pine Prairie went on an 8-0 surge to begin the third period, sparked by a trey from Manuel as the Lady Panthers grabbed a 27-20 advantage.
After two Lady Jay free throws and a jumper by Leger helped St. Edmund back in the game, trailing 30-25 as the game moved to the fourth quarter.
St. Edmund battled with four points from Miller and a free throw by Elissa David, but a pair of Lady Panther three-pointers helped Pine Prairie grab a 36-30 advantage.
McGee later drilled a three-pointer for the Lady Jays and Allison Lafleur added a jumper as St. Edmund grabbed a 40-38 lead with 1:30 left in the game.
Lazard and David exchanged free throws in the closing minute before Lazard hit the game-winner for the Lady Panthers.
David led the Lady Jays with 10 points, while Leger chipped in eight points.
Lazard led Pine Prairie with 13 points, while Tori Bordelon contributed 11 points.
SHVP 66, SEH 44
In a rematch from last week’s season opener, the Sacred Heart of Ville Platte Lady Trojans earned a 66-44 win over the Lady Jays to open the tournament Monday.
Sacred Heart jumped out to a 22-10 first quarter lead before St. Edmund regrouped for an 11-8 surge to close the gap to 30-21 at the break.
The Lady Trojans exploded for a 17-0 run in the third period to put the game away.
Trailing 47-21 as the game moved to the final period, the Lady Jays closed the game with a 24-19 battle.
St. Edmund’s Victoria McGee finished with 13 points, including three treys for the Lady Jays.
Gabby Andrepont led the Lady Trojans with 23 points, while Kara Aguillard pushed in 19 points.
Basile 47, SEH boys 37
In boys’ action Tuesday, the Basile Bearcats earned a 47-37 victory over the St. Edmund Blue Jays in the Turkey tournament.
Basile exploded for a 12-0 run to begin the game, sparked by five points from Tyree Bracey.
The Blue Jays battled back with a three-pointer by John Ross Guillory along with buckets from Cullen Brown and Will Chachere.
Brown added a bucket at the buzzer to close the gap to 12-9.
Dylan Beiber drove the lane and Guillory added a lay-up as the Blue Jays battled to keep the game close early in the second quarter.
After a 4-0 run by the Bearcats, Guillory drilled back-to-back treys help the Blue Jays grab a 21-19 lead with 2:20 left before the break.
Basile closed the half with a 7-1 run including a three-pointer by Rashawn Murphy to take a 26-22 advantage into the locker room.
The Bearcats outscored St. Edmund 10-4 in the third quarter as the Jays were limited to just two buckets by Guillory.
Trailing 36-28 early in the fourth quarter, the Blue Jays responded with buckets from Chachere and Guillory along with a baseline bucket from Brown.
The Bearcats went on a 8-2 run to seal the 47-37 win.
Guillory led the Blue Jays with 20 points, while Murphy lead Basile with 17 points.
SHVP 59, SEH 35
The Sacred Heart Trojans cruised to a 59-35 win over St. Edmund in the opening night of the annual Thanksgiving tournament.
SHVP opened with a 21-13 first quarter lead and then forged a 9-2 run in the second period.
The Trojans continued to control the contest with an 11-6 run in the third period.
Sacred Heart outscored St. Edmund 18-14 in the final period to seal the one-sided win.
Seth Shipp led Sacred Heart with 20 points, while Keaton Tate chipped in 18 points.
Brown led the Blue Jays with 16 points, while Guillory contributed 11 points.
St. Edmund will entertain Gueydan next Tuesday with the girls game set for 6 p.m.
