Bears sweep Jays
The battle between the Blue Jays and Bears went into overtime before Gueydan grabbed a 49-46 win over St. Edmund Tuesday night in Eunice.
With the game tied 44-44 at the end of regulation, Gueydan’s Emit Richard scored in the lane and Bailey Istre later added a free throw to push the Bears ahead, 47-44.
St. Edmund’s John Ross Guillory then scored with 1:19 left to close the gap to 47-46.
Colton Woods sealed the win for the Bears as he hit two free throws with eight seconds left.
St. Edmund took a 35-29 lead into the fourth period before Gueydan went ona 15-9 run to force overtime.
Woods hit two free throws with 7.7 seconds left in regulation to give the Bears a 44-43 advantage, but Guillory hit one with 3.6 seconds to tie the game.
The Jays opened the game with a 10-7 lead, aided by eight points from Cullen Brown.
Daylon Charles hit five points to push the Bears ahead before Brown scored on a put-back bucket to the tie game midway through the second period.
Dylan Beiber and Austin Gradney scored to give the Jays a 18-14 advantage, but the Bears closed the half with a 6-0 run to grab a 20-18 lead at intermssion.
St. Edmund went on a 17-9 surge in the third period, sparked by Guillory’s eight points as the Jays led by six points before the Bears battled back.
Brown led the Jays with 18 points, while Beiber added 12 points.
Woods led Gueydan with 19 points and Richard chipped in 15 points.

The Gueydan Honey Bears opened the game with a 14-2 run as Gueydan cruised to a 56-38 win over the Lady Jays.
Abby Miller scored the only bucket for St. Edmund in the first quarter.
The Lady Jays scored seven points in the second period, led by a trey from Victoria McGee.
Gueydan continued to dominate the contest with a 17-9 third quarter run, while the Lady Jays were helped by a three-pointer from Ellisa David and four points from Sydney Thibodeaux.
Gueydan pushed ahead 54-25 when T’Nina Leger scored her 20th point of the night with 3:48 left.
The Lady Jays then went on a 13-0 run to close the game, begun with back-to-back buckets by David along with points off steals by Gabby Fontenot and Thibodeaux.
David led St. Edmund with nine points, while Miller chipped in seven points.
