Arson suspected: Body found at residential fire near Church Point; 2nd fire involved burned vehicle
A body was found as Acadia Parish authorities investigated an early morning fire in the 600 block of Choppy Road near Church Point on Sunday.
Acadia Parish Sheriff Wayne Melancon stated that his office received a call from a passing motorist who reported the fire shortly before 6:30 a.m.
The Mire Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the scene and upon arrival found the structure fully engulfed and burned to the ground.
Once the fire was out members of the Mire Fire Department checked the structure, located a body near the front door and requested law enforcement at the scene.
Investigators with the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office along with the Acadia Parish Coroner’s Office and Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office were called to scene and have taken over the investigation.
The Acadia Parish Coroner’s Office advised that the body will be taken to Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office to determine the cause of death as well as the race and sex of the fire victim.
In a second fire incident, shortly before 8 a.m. the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office received a report of vehicle fire north of Church Point.
The Richard Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the scene and upon arrival found a vehicle fully engulfed near the intersection of Black Smith Road andLa. 95. The vehicle was located in front of an abandoned home was burned beyond recognition.At this time investigators are treating the incidents as arson but are unsure at this time if the incidents are connected.
